2. Why did you become a skin health professional?

After a car accident at a very early age, I was left with a scar across my face. As soon as the stitches were removed I started going to an aesthetician who helped my scar heal perfectly. I saw how every day my scar improved with her massage technique, serums and creams. I understood that my skin was alive; that it was grateful of everything we were doing for it; and that all it needed was time and patience to heal the right way. I am fascinated by the skin’s healing process because it holds great memory; it remembers if we are neglecting it or taking good care of it.

3. Tell us about a time you improved a patient’s life by addressing their skin concerns.

My favorite patients are young kids suffering from acneic skin. Helping them with their self-esteem is extremely rewarding to me. I will never forget the day I received the most truthful and grateful hug from a young patient that had been struggling with acne.

4. Do you have a favorite modality used in the treatment room?

Chemical peels and fractionated bi-polar radiofrequency (controlled dermal heating) are my favorite modalities to use in the treatment room.

5. What makes you a successful skin health professional?

What makes me a successful skin health professional is constant education, and the best products and machines available on the market.

I started out as a makeup artist and was encouraged to become an aesthetician as well; the two definitely go hand in hand. I liked the aspect of the skin care profession always having new opportunities for growth and knowledge.

3. Tell us about a time you improved a patient’s life by addressing their skin concerns.

I have had several clients with moderate to severe cases of hyperpigmentation; bringing them back to a state of feeling comfortable with their skin and enjoying their natural glow, along with having the confidence to venture out of the door with very little or no makeup. It makes me happy to see them feeling comfortable and having them share the compliments that they receive.

4. Do you have a favorite modality used in the treatment room?

I love the basics in my treatment room, such as my steamer, lamp, results-oriented products and my gentle hands.

5. What makes you a successful skin health professional?

When I bring new products and treatments into my studio, I share with my clients that I’ve already studied and experienced the products myself. My excitement starts before the new products are even in my studio. I believe it’s important to educate, assure and nurture my patients, so that they are also comfortable with the treatment that I have chosen for them. Everyone’s comfort level is different, so a customized approach is always good.

6. Why did you choose to partner with PCA SKIN?

I had seen PCA SKIN at various trade shows and their ads in trade journals over the years. I decided to broaden my range of peels that I was offering. Last year I finally visited the PCA SKIN booth at Face & Body and inquired about the training. I was impressed with all they had to offer in their “show package,” plus the PCA SKIN representative that helped me was both welcoming and informative. The ongoing and online education was a definite bonus; I would also say that PCA has the absolute best customer service! Whether I call in with just one question or five, they have always come through with answers and solutions for me.

I love the Pigment Bar®. It is one of my best sellers and it’s a great solution for everyone with pigmentation issues. Pigment Bar® is economical, has a fresh clean scent, and leaves the skin feeling clean and looking bright. It is the best bar in a jar! I also really like the Post-Procedure Solution and the Daily Care Solution Sets; they are great little tools to have in your practice.

8. What is your favorite PCA SKIN professional treatment and why?

I love Sensi Peel®; it’s a great starting point for someone who has never experienced a peel. It also suits my more advanced peel clients. I really like the “progressive” approach to treatment. The retinoid boosters are also great to go along with Sensi Peel®.

I would tell a newly certified PCA SKIN professional to take advantage of everything that is offered, from the additional training to the online courses to the samples sizes that are available; and to never feel that one single question is not an important one. I have been working in the skin care industry for three years.

2. What are the primary skin types and conditions you treat?

Because I work for a plastic surgeon I see a variety of conditions, but I mostly treat aging skin.

 3. On average, how many patients do you treat each week?

I see about 50 patients in a week.

 4. What is the average age group you treat?

I would say from 16-75 years old.

 5. Why did you become a skin health professional?

I became a skin professional because of my daughter’s experiences. My daughter has dealt with acneic, atopic dermatitis and super sensitive skin! I watched her become self-consciousness of her skin. Because of her suffering, I wanted to help others feel and look their very best!

6. Tell us about a time you improved a patient’s life by addressing their skin concerns.

I have a client who came to see me because she suffered from melasma. She was using Obagi, and had received an Erbium laser procedure and other treatments without any results. After doing a series of four PCA SKIN chemical peels, along with her home regimen of Pigment Gel®; Brightening Therapy® with TrueTone; C-Strength 20% with 5% Vitamin E and Intensive Clarity Treatment®: 0.5% pure retinol night; now her hyperpigmentation is 80% gone. She is thrilled with the results and has become one of my best marketing agents!

7. Do you have a favorite modality used in the treatment room?

I have been doing CO2 with PCA SKIN chemical peels, and it is my absolute favorite combination!

8. How are you using PCA SKIN peels with CO2?

I use PCA Peel® with Hydroquinone 15-20 minutes prior to CO2. This works great for reducing the chances of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and assisting in the removal of existing pigmentation, such as age spots.

9. What type of patient would be a candidate for CO2 laser with PCA SKIN peel?

Skin type I-III is a great candidate who also wants to erase years off their skin, improve collagen production and even surface tones. Get rid of years of sun damage and age spots!

10. What makes you a successful skin health professional?

Although I can’t cure every skin care ailment, I upgrade myself constantly with education and experience. This helps me feel more confident with giving my clients the best treatment suited for their needs. There isn’t a one-shoe-fits-all approach when it comes to skin; I adjust the products and routine according to the client’s individual skin type.

I chose PCA SKIN because of the results! We had other professional lines in the practice and I wasn’t seeing the results that I did with PCA. PCA addresses a variety of skin conditions.

It is hard to choose just one, I love all the peels! Sensi Peel® is a favorite because I have so many clients tell me they can’t have a peel because they have rosacea or sensitive skin. PCA Peel® with Hydroquinone is a great treatment for stubborn melasma. I also love to prep the skin with Clarify: Therapeutic Salicylic Acid Mask.

PCA SKIN representatives are all very knowledgeable and eager to help you be the best PCA SKIN Certified Professional! I have honestly called from another treatment room while a client is waiting and asked for recommended treatment options. Always listen to what your clients concerns are. Be honest and enjoy.

I had a bride in her early 30s come to me with really bad acne and hyper-pigmentation on the forehead. After using good quality products, and with the help of LED light and microdermabrasion, it has faded out and she was a very happy bride.

4. Do you have a favorite modality used in the treatment room?

Yes, microdermabrasion and LED light treatments.

5. What makes you a successful skin health professional?

I love what I do and want to really help anyone with skin problems. With PCA it has been a great success in my studio and that is because PCA really works.

how smoking impacts the skin

Smoking is one of the most controllable causes of disease and death today. It is also a major contributor to many skin conditions and complications, such as skin discoloration, breakdown of collagen and elastin, deep wrinkling, skin aging, poor wound healing and abnormal skin growths.

Our skin relies on oxygen in order to function properly. Air is pulled into our lungs, travels down to the smallest air sacs in the lungs, and is then carried throughout the body via the tiny and intricate network of capillaries. Without sufficient oxygen, the body and the skin suffer.

Nicotine in cigarette smoke causes vasoconstriction or blood vessel contraction, which limits the actual size of the vessel. Carbon monoxide in cigarettes bonds with oxygen, greatly reducing the amount available to the body. This combination of nicotine and carbon monoxide not only limits the size of the vessel, but also the amount of oxygen flowing through them.

some not so fun facts

  • Just one cigarette restricts blood flow for up to 90 minutes.
  • The body produces more blood vessels to compensate for the oxygen restriction due to smoking.
  • De-oxygenated skin often exhibits a grey or yellow tone.
  • It only takes 15-20 seconds for cigarette smoke to impact each part of the body.
  • Blood circulation is significantly decreased due to the vasoconstrictive nature of nicotine.

The sooner a smoker decides to quit, the sooner the vital organs and the skin start to heal. However, the breakdown of the dermal layers is not easily recovered by simply putting out the cigarette. Rebuilding of collagen, repairing elastin and improving the overall function of the dermis must be instigated.

Regular chemical peels will improve not only the production of collagen, but will also improve the tone and texture of the skin. Daily use of collagen-building topical products is also a vital component to reversing the signs of aging due to smoking. Integrating ingredients like vitamin C during the morning and retinoids at night, along with advanced peptides and epidermal growth factor, will prolong the benefits gained from monthly chemical peels.

The effects of cigarettes reach nearly every organ of the body, including the skin. The sooner a smoker puts down the cigarettes, the sooner the body will begin healing from the damage of the nicotine and various chemicals contained within. I have been a skin health professional for 10 years.

2. Why did you become a skin health professional?

I knew in my early teens that I wanted to be an aesthetician. I believe my love for skincare came from my Nana, who is 103, and my dad. I did facial masks at a very young age and was always the family “extractor”. Unfortunately, when I graduated high school there were no aesthetic programs in my state and I chose another career path. The love of skin care never went away and, at 40 years old, I went back to school and fulfilled my lifelong dream of being an aesthetician. I opened Simply Skin a year after I graduated.

3. Tell us about a time you improved a patient’s life by addressing their skin concerns.

I personally suffered with cystic acne and have a soft spot for those who have, too. A new client came to me with concerns of uneven, rough, dull skin left behind from acne. She was getting married and wanted glowing skin. We did a treatment series with Ultra Peel® I and got her on a home regimen which transformed her skin. She wrote me a beautiful letter thanking me.

4. Do you have a favorite modality used in the treatment room?

High frequency is my favorite modality used in the treatment room. I love my high frequency machine and so do my clients! They will call me when they have breakouts and say, ‘Can you do that zappy thing on me?’ It’s older, tried and true technology that can really make a difference in acne patients, and calms the skin beautifully after extractions.

5. What makes you a successful skin health professional?

I’m passionate about my clients achieving their personal best when it comes to their skin. I pride myself on treating every client who walks through my door as an individual and give them 100% of my attention. Every appointment with me should be a positive experience with positive results. Over the years, many clients have told me that they love that I’m so meticulous.

2. Why did you become a skin health professional?

I knew I wanted to work with skin in some way since middle school. The main reason I became an aesthetician is because of my own skin. Growing up I had cystic, painful, embarrassing acne. I got my first pimple in 4th grade, and my skin progressively got worse and continued past high school. I saw doctors and dermatologists, and after multiple trial and error, medications both topically and internally, they told me there was nothing more they could do unless I wanted to do Accutane. After reading the scary booklet about Accutane and all the possible side effects, I decided there had to be some other way. Becoming an aesthetician has been a blessing in more ways than one. I was able to diagnose and treat my own skin, and I have been able to use my passion and personal experience to relate to and help clients of all ages feel comfortable in their own skin!

3. Tell us about a time you improved a patient’s life by addressing their skin concerns.

A regular client I had when I was in Minnesota came to me for a facial and her biggest concern was her milia. This particular client had mature skin and up until that point had no solution to resolving her concern. We discussed proper skin care, what may be causing the milia and a regular facial schedule. After following my suggestions and instructions, she came back to me ecstatic; the milia were gone and under control! Being able to cure clients’ concerns and seeing how confident they become is one of the greatest feelings!

4. Do you have a favorite modality used in the treatment room?

Microdermabrasion is my secret weapon. I love that I can control how aggressive or sensitive I can make the treatment, and also be able to concentrate more on some areas of concern if need be. Microderm allows me to slough off the dull, dry skin cells to get better extractions, give my client that healthy glow, and of course make that skin texture feel silky smooth.

5. What makes you a successful skin health professional?

I believe being honest with my clients is what has made me the successful aesthetician I am! Honesty builds trust, which is very important to me. Having a trusting relationship with my clients allows me to take care of their skin and help them achieve the results they are looking for!

6. Why did you choose to partner with PCA SKIN?

Since I moved to the Valley, I have heard nothing but good things about PCA products and PCA’s education. I am always eager for continuing education and after taking classes at PCA I was excited to get into the treatment room to share my knowledge and new products with my clients!

7. What is your favorite PCA SKIN daily care product and why?

I am in love with PCA’s BPO 5% Cleanser; it is actually what I use at home! One of the reasons it is so great is you can apply it like a mask in the shower while you do everything else, then come back and finish cleansing your face. It takes cleansing to a whole new level, and my skin hasn’t been this clear and refreshed in a long time!

8. What is your favorite PCA SKIN professional treatment and why?

PCA SKIN’s peels have made me a believer! Previous to working with PCA, I was not a fan of chemical peels; I didn’t like how they felt and believed I got better results with microdermabrasion. It is hard for me to pick my favorite PCA peel because I love them all! I like that I can get great results using the PCA modified Jessner’s peels on my more resilient clients, as well as with the Sensi Peel® on my more sensitive clients! Being able to comfortably add on correctors and boosters to enhance the treatment is what puts PCA peels ahead of competitors!

9. What would you say to a newly certified PCA SKIN professional?

It may seem overwhelming at first with all the different combinations of products, but don’t fret! There is nothing wrong with using your cheat sheet to maximize your treatment and get those results that will make both yourself and your client amazed!
